Historic Nutbourne Houses: The Old School House

1858 Nutbourne Church of England School relocated from a smaller building lower in the village to the new, purpose-built School House
1940-1948 Miss Baker was Headmistress. Tony Gotcher (Wilhaven) and Mr Short (who has moved to Lancing) were among the pupils
1953 The school closed
1954-1960 The Old School was used as a community building, serving both as a Church and a meeting hall for whist drives and social occasions
1960-1962 Served as a billet for student fruit picker
late 1960s Tastefully converted to a private house

This pen and ink drawing of The Old School House from 1989 reveals its fine stone construction with
lancet windows and a bell cote gable tower, which are splendid examples of early Victorian architecture.
